Haida Gwaii House

reid-haidaENDED FEB 28, 2010: Located at the ground level of the Hampton Inn is a mini Haida Gwaii. This venue will feature a special longhouse and will showcase Haida art and culture, wilderness, Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, marine animals, shore birds and much more. The Haida Gwaii House will be open from February 11th to the 28th from 12 noon to 9 pm.  Ambassadors will be available onsite to answer questions and talk about the place they live. Also on display will be a Haida mask carved by Regg Davidson, an 11 foot totem pole designed by Tim Boyko, and a number of scrolling images. If you're lucky, you may just see Haida in their own regalia. Or you may bump into Christian White, a Haida artist who will be at work carving on site.

Their new website is located at www.GoHaidaGwaii.ca. There will also be free contest prizes given away daily at the venue. Haida Gwaii House is really close to BC Place Stadium, home of the opening and closing ceremonies. If you want directions on how to get there, click here. Just went here last night and had a wonderful experience. Even though it's a very small exhibit, the carvings are beautiful, there's a lot of information on visiting Haida Gwaii, and the people are just wonderful - so friendly and helpful. Highly recommended if you're thinking of a trip to Haida Gwaii, and highly recommended even if you aren't yet, because after visiting here, you will be.

I have enjoyed seeing a small but artful display of Haida longhouse and visual technology showcasing one of the most special places on earth, and in the heart of the big city.
thank you to all who have worked there and made it happen for Haida Qwaii to have a presence

Excellent display hope to go there some day.

OMG, the smell of cedar as soon as you walk into this place is well worth the visit. I love the cedar totem pole and smell exhibits. Nice tourism brochures too just in case you want to visit Haida Gwaii soon. You can see some Haida natives there too. The ladies look so beautiful and fresh, must be all that cedar smell! Breathtaking!

we really enjoyed this small but special exhibit of a very beautiful, special and cool place. We hope to go and visit someday soon. The totem poles are really nice.

Please be advised that when I click on the link listed above in hypertext, it tries to connect me with 'GoHaidaGwaii.com' rather than ".ca" so it comes up as an error with a message of 'cannot connect'. Hopefully you can correct this quickly because there will be lots of visitors wanting to soak up our Haida Heritage.
Enjoy the games,
