While I’m a big fan of long-drawn out romantic meals, after a day on the local slopes, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as biting into a juicy burger – this is comfort food at its best. The Americans have perfected the fast-food burger with identical chains littering every continent. But it’s the specialty burger, the one that’s unique and homemade with the finest ingredients that draws my attention. There are a couple of local chains that hold a nostalgic place in the hearts of Vancouverites. You’ll find a perfectly decent burger at Vera’s Burger shack; and White Spot. There are many locations so just check their websites for one near you. To get to the next level of burger, there are two special places worth visiting.
Moderne Burger is a throw-back to a 50’s diner with a modern twist. The classic beef burger features top grade sirloin. If you prefer a “healthier” option, you can choose to substitute the beef for a turkey, salmon, or veggie patty. The fries are hand-cut and fried to perfection: crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Wash down your meal with a soda, shake or float.
Moderne Burger, 2507 W. Broadway, Vancouver: 604-739-0005; Tues-Sun: noon – 7:45pm. Meal: $15. Close to all Granville Island venues.
Burger Heaven is located in New Westminster, a short 30 minute ride on the sky train from downtown. The burgers are huge, and if you’re not careful the juice will run down your arm. You’ll be amazed by the selection of toppings. If you’re hungry, order The works (cheddar, mozzarella, bacon, mushroom, pickles). If you feel like you could eat a horse, get the Ernie’s mile high (2.5 lbs of beef, cheddar, bacon, mozzarella, pickels). The shakes here are particularly tasty.
