Vancouver's government in exile? BC Lee & cast shine in Flower Drum Song
Vancouver's government in exile? B.C. Lee & former colleagues after his debut in Flower Drum Song

A reunion of sorts tonight as several members of Vancouver's "government in exile" crawled out of their bunker in a secret location east of Boundary Road to celebrate former Vancouver City Councillor B.C. Lee's debut performance at the Waterfront Theatre. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song is being staged by the Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre company in a preview performance Thursday night, and the show begins a 13-night run at the Waterfront on Granville Island until June 14th.

Flower Drum Song is set in San Francisco’s Chinatown of the late 50’s, takes a “colourful” approach to the age-old conflict that affects even the traditional immigrant family – the Generation Gap. According to the production's media release, this is the very first time that this Tony award-winning Broadway musical will be presented in Vancouver as a full production, during this, the 50th anniversary of the play. Another milestone for Vancouver theatre will be the all-Asian-Canadian cast, along with an Asian Canadian production team.

What all of us who attended can vouch for is the amazing talent both on and off stage this production represents. The singing and choreography are top notch, and the costumes and sets are vivid and fun.

Widely regarded as one of the nicest people to get elected as a City Councillor ("nice" is not a dominant characteristic in local politics), B.C. put on a great show and his many friends and supporters in the audience were thrilled to see him enjoying life after politics.
