Burrard Bridge

You read it here first. CityCaucus.com readers already knew it, but now it's official, Vancouver is considering closing not only one, but two lanes of Burrard street bridge to vehicular traffic. The two bridge lanes would now be available for bicycle traffic only.

Council were told by the City's engineering staff at a Planning and Environment Committee meeting last week the one lane option is likely not viable. Previous staff reports indicated that closing lanes to vehicular traffic on one of the City's busiest bridges will likely cause gridlock and divert traffic to other already congested bridges.

Council and staff were urged by supporters of the closures to make it work. Does it signal a political shift to the left as this writer suggests?
