Taxpayers on the hook for City party

Have you heard of the global economic meltdown? You know, the one forcing governments to tighten their belts and watch every tax dollar. Well, someone forgot to pass that message to the new council in Vancouver.

In his first official act as Mayor of Vancouver, Mayor Gregor Robertson and his Vision Vancouver colleagues have chosen to spend thousands of tax dollars on an a splashy inaugural shindig at the Sunset Community Centre. For decades, the inaugural ceremony has been held inside the Vancouver council chamber, something that costs almost nothing.

In 2002, COPE Mayor Larry Campbell decided to move the inaugural event to the Roundhouse Community Centre. In 2005, NPA Mayor Sam Sullivan cited costs as the main reason why he decided to hold his inaugural ceremony at City Hall.

Just imagine if all the tax dollars spent on this glitzy ceremony were given to a local homeless shelter or foodbank? is planning to track down the full cost of the event and will let city taxpayers know how much this first act of Council cost. Rumours are swirling about it costing tens of thousands of dollars. That's hard to stay tuned into for the latest.
